My students celebrated the end of their semester last night at the awards ceremony for the FHLB Affordable Housing Development Competition. Over the past six weeks they have been working with Donald Alexis from the Caribbean Integration Community Development (CICD) along with architecture and policy students from Harvard’s Kennedy School and Northeastern to design an affordable housing proposal in Mattapan…

Jon Neal and Caroline Feran with our incredibly ugly sweater

What’s the best part about the winter holidays? The food, you say? The family? The snow? The decorations? No, no, no – of course not. It’s the ugly sweaters you get to wear! This year, Kimball Office very kindly invited our interior design department to participate in their prestigious ‘Holiday Ugly Sweater Contest’ held in conjunction with their annual holiday soiree. With visions of ugly sweater grandeur and dreams of glory, we were unable to resist the allure of the challenge…

3D Model Competition
at ABX

Design Studio

While attending ABX this week, I had a chance to stop by NRI’s booth and take a look at the three contenders for their 3-D printed model contest. It was great to see what had previously only been an image on-screen turn into an actual physical object I could touch, turn, and pick up. While all three entries were visually interesting, we’re all hopeful that the crowd liked ours the best – we expect to hear back with a final count sometime in the next few days.

A-Team’s Walk-off Win!

Congratulations to the Arrowstreet A-Team for bringing home our first victory of the softball season over SMMA… and in dramatic fashion. It was a close, seesaw-style game throughout the night, with each team being ahead in back and forth fashion until the bottom of the seventh, when the A-Team was down by 3 runs. Then a come-from-behind, walk-off grand slam sent the A-Team cheering to a 17-16 win.

Summer Bowling at Flatbread Pizza

Studio People

This summer at AST introduced a new weekly tradition of heading over to Sacco’s Bowl Haven for flatbread pizza, socializing, and candlepin bowling. It’s been a great way for the firm to blow off steam and engage in some (healthy) competition. Results this year showed an even spread week to week of close games and high intensity. Competition was fierce; for four consecutive weeks, both teams alternated the lead by less than a half pin difference! On the final week, both teams bowled their best at the championship match between teams AH and IZ. After a careful tally of

Pumpkin Design Contest

On Friday, October 28th Arrowstreeters showcased their design, carving, and decorating skills at our 4th annual Pumpkin Design Contest.  We had a variety of entries in this year’s contest, including a Transformkin complete with drywall screws (Matt Rice); a traditional Halloween bat carving (Greg Triplett); a wide-eyed, floppy-eared dog named Spot (Mike Conlan); a cannibalistic pumpkin dripping candy corn (Stephanie Tyll and Lama Bitar); and pumpkin carved like an Oak tree with a “tire” swing (Lauren Haggerty)…

Livable Communities Exhibit

Arrowstreet will be showcasing Keen’s Crossing at Winooski Falls at the Livable Communities Exhibit, located  in the A.P.E. Gallery in Northampton, MA from October 1-15. Hosted by the AIA New England / Western Massachusetts AIA, the exhibit highlights projects located in New England or designed by New England firms that relate to the AIA’s Ten Principles of Livable Communities. We felt Keen’s Crossing- located in Winooski, Vermont- was a great fit for many reasons- its vibrant public courtyards, mix of uses, and neighborhood identity among them…

BSA Selects Designer for New Space

Design Inspiration

I was asked to sit on the jury this past fall for the Boston Society of Architect’s competition for the design of its new space at Atlantic Wharf. The jury reviewed the approximately 20 entries and selected Höweler + Yoon Architecture. The submittals were both wide ranging and also quite impressive in terms of design quality and the firms and individuals who participated…
