On April 4th, the Mirbeau Inn and Spa at The Pinehills in Plymouth, MA officially kicked off with a groundbreaking ceremony. The event was hosted by Pinehills, LLC President John Judge and Managing Partner Tony Green. The well-attended gathering included Gary and Linda Dower, the principals of Mirbeau Hospitality Services, as well as several town and state officials including Rep. Vinny deMacedo, R-Plymouth, and Rep. Tom Calter, D-Kingston, all of whom praised the arrival of this resort property to the area. As a part of the design team, it was a pleasure to see how warmly the Dowers and the project have been embraced by the Pinehills community…
Yesterday I attended the opening session of The Americas Lodging Investment Summit (ALIS) in Los Angeles, and I wanted to share some early themes from the convention. Attendance at the conference is back up to 2,500 (similar to 2007), which some attendees see as a sign that optimism has returned to the market…
The start of a new year brings optimism and refreshed energy for the future, and also a chance to look back on accomplishments from the previous year. 2012 was a busy year at Arrowstreet. We celebrated the opening of two new charter schools in the Boston metro area, the corporate headquarters for Rechler Equity in Long Island, White Elephant Village Inn in Nantucket, a T-station garage and cool new bridge in Revere, and an LL Bean store in Danbury. The Arrowstreet construction banner was flying high in 2012…
The New Year is a time to both reflect upon recent accomplishments and look forward to future triumphs. As we start 2013, we’re sharing some of our favorite moments of the past year.

We visited both KIPP Academy Lynn and Excel Academy Charter School on their first days of school and observed students’ reactions to the building we designed. It was uplifting to see how excited they were about entering the schools, despite the end of summer vacation…

The weather may be turning gray and wintry outside, but the inviting warmth of the White Elephant Village Inn is a perfect getaway. We’ve been working with Nantucket Island Resorts for over 15 years now on a number of their hospitality venues – the Wauwinet Inn, the White Elephant Hotel, the White Elephant Hotel Residences, and now the White Elephant Village Inn…

I’ve been working lately with Brad Edgerly, David Bois, and Sean Selby on rehabilitating the Canoe Place Inn in the Hamptons. Prominently located overlooking the Shinnecock Canal in Hampton Bays, it has traditionally been a gateway to Hampton Bays when traveling west across the Shinnecock and is the last building you see before entering Shinnecock Hills travelling down the Old Montauk Highway…
We are a bit late in sharing this (must have been a busy summer!), but Arrowstreet was featured in an article discussing top markets in Urban Land magazine. Check out the section on Boston.

I recently visited the UMass Lowell Inn & Conference Center with Ed Wonsek to capture the elegance and excitement of this Arrowstreet-designed campus hospitality venue. The ICC is a beautiful example of the integration of “town and gown.” (And the food – the hotel features a full restaurant, 50 Warren, in its lobby area – was delicious!) I hope you enjoy these images and don’t hesitate to visit 50 Warren and the ICC.
Harvard Square Hotel recently shared this video tour showing off their newly renovated spaces designed by Arrowstreet. The hotel recently reopened after an intense construction schedule of approximately 3 months and the positive response from their guests has been overwhelming.

Renovations create a welcoming atmosphere // Photo by Eric Roth
Arrowstreet’s design for the Harvard Square Hotel has recently been realized with the re-opening and re-launch as a boutique hotel following the three month renovations. A complete transformation of the hotel, we worked with Harvard to update the image and improve the overall guest experience. To improve the entrance to the hotel, Arrowstreet established a connection to the street and created a lobby seating area with panoramic views of Harvard Square. At the street entrance, we designed stone and glass monumental stair to invite guests from the Mt. Auburn street entry to the lobby and reception area. Integral to the renovation was the complete reconfiguration of the lobby levels, doubling space available to guests to create contemporary, comfortable public space…
I was recently able to attend a special event at the Harvard Square Hotel: the ribbon cutting ceremony officially marking the re-opening of the building after our renovations. Cambridge Mayor Henrietta Davis had the honor of cutting the ribbon which was located at the top of the new Arrowstreet designed steel, stone, and glass monumental stair. Collegiate Hospitality’s CEO Richard Carbone, Mayor Davis, Cambridge City Councilor Kenneth Reeves, Councilor Marjorie Decker, and City Manager Robert Healy all praised the transformation of the old motel to the new boutique hotel…

A few weeks ago, my fellow Arrowstreeters and I got a chance to visit the Harvard Square Hotel, currently finishing up renovations (and set to open in the next few weeks). David Bois and Sarah Mobraten gave us a tour of the facilities and shared some great stories about the design and construction…
On April 12, I will be speaking at SCUP’s North Atlantic Conference alongside Peter Riley of Harvard University and John Kiely of Collegiate Hospitality on the topic of ”Positioning Hospitality on Campus.” During this toolkit, Peter will share valuable firsthand experience from Harvard’s campus hotels and how the University is positioning these facilities to meet institutional goals for the future. I will share key suggestions for planning and designing campus hotels, while John will share the developer’s perspective…

Recently, Ed Wonsek and I headed down to the Women’s Lunch Place to photograph the finished space. The last time I’d been to WLP was in late November, when Scott Pollack and I were painting the bookshelves he and a few other Arrowstreet’ers built in the reading room. At that point, the renovations to the kitchen and dining area were complete, but WLP hadn’t quite finished unpacking their bags and occupying the space. On this trip, though, everything was complete- and what an incredible difference…
We recently received new photos of the beautiful Reykjavik Natura hotel, which just re-opened this June after renovations…
Where do you stay when you need a place to spend the night and you are near a school or university? Arrowstreet has just completed construction on two such projects and is in the midst of design for another. The University of Massachusetts in Lowell and Harvard University are giving new thoughts to the potential market for guests who wish to stay on-campus, and they are undertaking designs which transform their offerings. Another related example is our recent work for Phillips Academy Andover at the Andover Inn…
We recently took somewhat of an unconventional approach to creating a mock-up room for one of our hospitality clients by actually creating furniture out of foam core so we can quickly get a feel for the space. Since all of the furniture pieces we’ve selected for this renovation project are custom, and the design and construction schedule for the renovation is very tight, we didn’t have the time to do a traditional model room with actual manufactured furniture (which is why we’re calling it a mock-up instead of a model room). This was especially important as the hotel is upgrading from queen beds to king beds, so we want to be sure the client is comfortable with the layout.
Recently, Keri Drake and I visited the Andover Inn at Phillips Academy. Arrowstreet designed the renovation of this 1920’s building to create a stylish, boutique hotel with a classic feel. The assignment was to photograph the interior and exterior of the inn for Arrowstreet’s design portfolio of hospitality projects…
The Reykjavik Natura, formerly the Hotel Loftleidir, re-opened on June 9th with a gala reception, featuring circus performers and Icelandic delicacies, which I was able to attend during a recent trip to Iceland…
I recently was asked to write an article for High Profile Monthly on the opening of the new Inn and Conference Center at UMass Lowell – a renovation project we designed. The article follows…

Icelandair Hotels, as operator, and Reitir, as developer, requested Arrowstreet’s help to re-invent Reykjavik Natura (formerly Hotel Loftleidir)—a 220-room property located in the bustling city of Reykjavik, Iceland…
After two and half years of planning and construction, the Andover Inn re-opened after a complete renovation by Arrowstreet, working alongside Erland Construction in a design-build partnership. “It was important to the Academy that the Andover Inn’s historic architecture be preserved amid what was otherwise a top-to-bottom modernization project,” said Michael Williams, Phillips Academy’s director of facilities about the multi-million dollar renovation…
